SAVOR THE FLAVORS OF SUMMER IN THE LOWCOUNTRY
Carolina FoodPros™ offers culinary tours every Friday and Saturday
CHARLESTON, S.C.
May 16, 2005
This summer, savor the flavors of South Carolina’s Lowcountry with a culinary heritage tour. Experience the smells and tastes of the region’s terroir, the unique combination of the area’s soil, water, and subtropical climate. Learn about the city’s culinary history, which spans 300 years.
Featured in the 2005 Michelin Guide as one of the “Must Dos In Charleston,” these culinary tours have received rave reviews, and have been featured in Bon Appetit, Boston Herald, The Washington Times and on Turner South’s Three Day Weekend.
“Food is a part of our city’s mystique,” said Amanda Manning, a 10th generation South Carolinian and local culinary expert. “It has played a significant role in our city’s economic and social development, as well as our nation’s history.”
Manning leads visitors through the streets of the historic city, enlightens them with her vast knowledge of the region’s culinary history, and introduces them to local artisans and farmers who are preserving the area’s culinary heritage.
1st Addition/Friday Culinary Tours
Sponsored by Carolina FoodPros TM, a Charleston-based company dedicated to educating, preserving and promoting the region’s heritage foods, the tours offer visitors a taste of the
Lowcountry’s history through its foods. Tasting stops are selected from a variety of specialty shops, artisan bakeries, restaurants, chocolatiers and markets.
Carolina FoodPros TM offers two weekly tours. Every Friday afternoon, Manning will lead food enthusiasts through an exclusive tour of the Charleston Museum’s exhibit: The Bountiful Coast: Foodways of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Visitors are guided through time, exploring the foodways and dining customs of the 18th and 19th centuries. Following the narrated tour, Manning takes guests on a culinary excursion through downtown Charleston, making tasting stops along the way.
On Saturdays, food aficionados will enjoy a culinary walking tour through the historic city. On this tour, participants travel to the weekly Farmer’s Market in Marion Square. Here, they meet area farmers and artisan producers, the base of South Carolina’s culinary repute, and taste heritage foods such as stone ground grits and artichoke relish. Manning guides visitors through two additional tasting stops where they have an opportunity to go behind the scenes, and may enjoy hands-on demonstrations or watch local artisans create culinary delights.
Both tours begin at the Charleston Museum, located at the corner of Meeting and John Streets in downtown Charleston, travel approximately two miles, and accommodate up to 20 people. Reservations are required. Friday tour times are 2-5 p.m. and are priced at $45.00 per person, which includes admission to the Charleston Museum. Tours run through December 2005.
Saturday tours start at 9:30 a.m. and run until noon. Tickets are $35.00 per person and are available through Carolina FoodProsTM online at www.carolinafoodpros.com or by calling 843-723-3366. Visitors can also purchase tickets at the Charleston Visitor & Reception Center, located at 375 Meeting Street in downtown Charleston -- doors open at 9 a.m.
